I bought a Winix earlier before this one so that is the only one I can compare this to. This one definitely looks more appealing than the Winix but the Winix does its job better than this one.The hole in the machine is just for aesthetics. No air or anything except the light uses that hole. Air sucks in from the sides of the purifier and exhausts out the top.
It has an auto setting that adjusts according to what the sensor relays. However, the sensor hardly ever changed on our machine unless we were cooking and there was smoke. The Winix we have would sense farts and stuff like that but this one would not. Can't tell if that is good or not, you decide.
The light can be turned off but you will still have a blue power light on. We covered that at night because I am sensitive to lights when I sleep. Other than that, it was pretty quiet. I do vacuum the filters at least once a month.
If anything, cleaning it makes you realize how dirty the air actually is you breathe. Get a purifier!
