Have used several less expensive HEPA filters in the past with less than stellar results - the Blueair 501 cleans the air more thoroughly - I would wake up occasionally coughing before (most likely due to pet dander) - have not had this happen since running the purifier at night on setting "4" of 5. I also have a neighbor who's second-hand smoke sometimes drifts in through the pipe fittings - the smell has disappeared, too.
