Dimplex Electraflame 39 Inch Built In Electric Fireplace with Purifire Air Treatment System Review
I wanted a fireplace I could simply plug in and not have to bother with natural gas, propane, or wood.That put me into the realm of the electric fireplace.
I read reviews I'd Googled on the internet and they seemed to agree that Dimplex was the choice of most people.
I went to a few home improvement stores to look at the real product so I could make a better decision.
While I didn't see every model of every manufacturer, I did see a good number and I found the Dimplex brand to look the best for my tastes.
I wanted to make an entertainment center for a HDTV with the fireplace as the centerpiece of the entertainment center.
For that purpose I chose the built in fireplace model. They come in 33", 39", and 45" models.
They will run on 120V or 240V. With the 120V option you get only 5000 BTU of heat. With the 240V option you get up to 10,000 BTU's of heat.
There is a master manual on/off switches for the whole unit and individual switches for the air cleaner and heat. Options include an external on/off switch, thermostat, and a remote control.
There is a mesh curtain that pulls across the front of the fireplace giving it realistic look. A couple of styles of glass doors are available as an option.
Of course, the whole review depends upon the look of the fire. I give it 4 stars out of 5.
The flames look fairly real and the glowing ember bed and variable glowing logs do impart a realistic look to the fire. I'd expect the flames to be higher in a real fire, but the overall effect is acceptable especially when I factor in the ease of use verses that of a gas or wood fireplace.
I really feel this would be a 5 star unit if they included a sound tract of a fire. I downloaded one from the internet and put it in an mp3 player attached to a set of amplified speakers which added another dose of realism to the fireplace.
A smell of smoke would make it almost perfect!
It appears these are available in a deluxe version with the slow pulsating LED logs or a standard version without.
Some of the other models seemed to have different types of fires available. This appears to only have one mode.
Dimplex's newest innovation is called Optimyst. It is supposed to be the most realistic fire yet by using steam and light to simulate flames. The video looks impressive, but so do the prices.
I paid $475 shipped for the fireplace and am happy with it. At $1099 price I see at most places, I'd be less happy, but still buy it again.
In summary, I think it is a good product with a believable flame. Only the addition of simulate fire sound would add more realism and I can do that by myself.UPDATE: 3/1/2011 I have downloaded a few mp3's of a crackling fire and finally settled on this one:
