3M Office Air Cleaner & Replacement Filter Review
I had an OAC100 that ran 24/7 for more than a DECADE in my office cubicle , until it finally died of old age last month (May 2011). I absolutely loved it, and it was very quiet. I was happy to see that it was still available at Amazon for the great price of $149 (others were selling the product for $250-$300). I ordered; it arrived. What a disappointment! When I turned it on at the lowest setting, it produced a whistle-like sound (kind of like an airplane revving up) that was entirely unacceptable in an office environment. Because I was very familiar with the OAC100, I believed this particular item was defective. I contacted Amazon, and after follow-up, received a Return Authorization. I communicated that I knew this was not the way the machine should sound and requested a properly working replacement -- not a REFUND (I had 5 new filters sitting in my office; I didn't want to change to another type of Office Air Cleaner). Long story short, after another considerable amount of time, I received an email to say that technicians had determined the machine was working properly and my purchase price would be refunded -- less a substantial restocking fee. I'm NOT happy -- I have 5 brand new OAC100 filters and no functioning machine. If this is how an exceptionally well-functioning machine is manufactured today, it's a sad story. I'm disappointed with both 3M (a major manufacturer) and Amazon (where I've been a frequent customer for more than a decade). I'm also out the $15 restocking fee for this defective merchandise.
