My boyfriend has minor asthma and I live in a small NYC apartment with 3 cats. The cat hair would affect him when he came over to visit - he could not sleep over because in the middle of the night he could no longer breathe properly. I first bought a Sharper Image Ionic Breeze. It did collect some airborne particles but did not help with the cat hair and was not effective enough to help my boyfriend. I have since sold it. I then bought the Whispure 510 and it works wonderfully. I keep it on 24/7. The noise is similar to white noise on low / intermediate for sleeping - not a problem for me or any guests that I have had visit. My boyfriend noticed a difference within about 30 minutes of turning it on. There is also less dust around the place.
